"The borders of our cities, expanding, and are therefore evidence of a society in acceleration, special places where transformations and changes reveal themselves in meaningful ways. Reflecting on these boundaries means think in a transversal way across our society, its past, its present, also to try to better understand our future. "
Since the implementation of video review Suburbs in Motion
Past Present is a short, poetic video about the reality of the district of Genoa Begato, contrasting it to the vision and rhetoric Surface printing of the seventies and eighties, when the city was built satellite and celebrated as a success.
The video - in 2008 - was born from a chance meeting between Simona Piras, which together constitute the association with Stephen Lanini mobile laboratory, and Ms. Yolanda, who later became the protagonist and namesake of the next mobile laboratory work, winner of the audience award at the Genova Film Festival 2009 and the indication of Migrants to the second edition of Outside Connection Visions Film Festival.
"That day Simon was carrying only a small TV camera to record in mpeg4 - says Stephen Lanini - so we had to play with the images in the editing. We chose to represent Begato fragmented as a place where things get even more confused and blurred. It is a symbol of how we feel and see the periphery. Then, continuing the work of the neighborhood, we had access to 20 years of press clippings, collected by a teacher of the place, and so was born the idea of \u200b\u200bputting a contrasting headlines with everyday living. "
Stefano and Simona have also worked as consultants for the city of Genoa during the symposium on the outskirts of Begato, and gave the initial impetus to the creation of a laboratory in the area. The initial idea was to map the critical and disruption of the neighborhood through the voice of the people, a basis for proposing ideas for change and regeneration.
"We always talk about crime - said Stephen - but a security person told us that there are no, or at least until two years ago there were no statistical data on which and how many crimes actually take place in the district. There are also problems of degradation that does not depend on the population and which no one speaks rarely, if something breaks it is almost impossible to fix windows, doors and other building accessories were purchased in the stock of discontinued lines at the time of construction and no longer exist. In an interview, an executive of the company Maintenance told us that Begato not receive more requests than other areas of public housing is simply more difficult to intervene. "
Mobile laboratory has also worked to select the video for review Suburbs in Motion (February 2010) and to organize, in collaboration with the Film Festival Genova, Genoa also works on other devices and is making a new video Cornigliano Lanini while Stephen has written a documentary project on Begato and is seeking funds to upgrade it.
We hope to take advantage of the event again next year Suburbs in Motion, at the time waiting for a response to funding and of seeing new work of the association, which supports its activities with the methods of analysis and reflection on the city that are useful to everyone.
